City University of New York Honors College

The CUNY (City University of New York) Honors College Intranet was created, from scratch, by Zach Davis, who was responsible for the planning and implementation from the beginning to end. The CUNY Honors College is a decentralized college and its students are spread across 7 campuses in the CUNY system, located in the different boroughs of New York City. With the mandate of creating cross-campus community, Zach created the intranet, a TYPO3 driven site containing hundreds of pages, over one thousand frontend users, and at least 20 backend editors at any given time.

The site also contains a number of custom TYPO3 extensions, developed from scratch including:

  • an instructional technology news feed extension (RSS),
  • a campus-wide facebook allowing students to edit their biographical information,
  • a student project archive,
  • a workshop registration system,
  • and a backend bulk user account creation module.

Zach was also responsible for planning the site, researching open source CMS solutions, and implementing his choice. The Honors College opted to go with TYPO3 because of it's power and flexibility. This large intranet was created at a fraction of the cost of a proprietary solution.
