Shared Hosting Frequently Asked Questions
Other hosts provide unlimited bandwidth and disk space. Why doesn't Cast Iron Coding do the same?
In recent years, the trend among webhosts has been to advertise unlimited resources with the knowledge that most users will only use a fraction of those resources. In some ways, this has been good for the customer, especially insofar as it's led hosts to remove arbitrary limits on email accounts, databases, ftp accounts, etc. That said, it has also introduced a degree of dishonesty into the business insofar as most webhosts who advertise unlimited resources actively suspend and in some cases terminate the accounts of those users who aggressively utilize server resources.
Because we believe that transparency between host and customer is crucial to our success, we set limits on disk space, bandwidth, domains, and subdomains. We do this because we want to ensure strong performance for every user on the host and these limits allow us to ensure that no single user is utilizing too many resources. Also, unlike most other hosts, we take incremental backups of our user's sites which requires significant additional disk space.
In sum, we set these limits because we firmly believe that they allow us to provide better service to all of our customers.
How does Cast Iron Coding support their shared hosting clients?
Cast Iron Coding provides ticket-based support from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, PST. During west coast business hours (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM), customers should feel free to call us at our office in Portland, OR. Unlike many other shared hosts, we do provide personalized, one-on-one support by phone. All of our shared hosts are monitored 24/7 by a third party that provides after-hours emergency response and reboots.
We take support very seriously at Cast Iron Coding and understand that it is the most important part of any shared hosting package. All of our technicians and developers are college graduates who work locally in Portland, Oregon. We require all team members to be skilled communicators, and we take great pride in not only resolving issues, but communicating resolutions to our customers clearly, taking the extra time to explain what went wrong and why.
What approach does Cast Iron Coding take to managed backups?
All of our shared hosts are backed up daily using Seagate's EVault backup product. An agent runs on each machine and stores incremental backups. We retain daily backups for the past seven days, four weekly backups, and one monthly backups for each client's home directory. We have mechanisms in place to restore specific files and/or directories on request.
We provide this service as a courtesy for all clients, but we do not guarantee these backups. It is ultimately the responsibility of each client to ensure that they keep local backups of their files.
Will Cast Iron Coding help me migrate my site?
Careful site migrations are not included in our shared hosting packages. However, our developers have quite a bit of experience moving sites from one host to another without incurring any downtime, and our team is available to plan and implement a migration strategy. The work will, however, be billed at our hourly consulting rates.
Do you offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes, we offer a 60-day money-back guarantee. If you are dissatisfied with your hosting for any reason, let us know and we will refund your money.
